Comey, as Director of the FBI, oversaw the Bureau when it undertook the Trump-Russia investigation, called "Crossfire Hurricane" by the FBI and referred to with scorn by conservatives aligned with the President as the Russiagate hoax.

The indictment of Comey comes on two counts, including, according to Fox News, "alleged false statements within jurisdiction of the legislative branch and obstruction of congressional proceeding.

Attorney General Pam Bondi commented on the indictment in a post on X.com.

"No one is above the law. Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people. We will follow the facts in this case," Bondi wrote.

President Trump weighed in on the indictment of Comey on Truth Social.

"JUSTICE IN AMERICA!" Trump wrote. "One of the worst human beings this Country has ever been exposed to is James Comey, the former Corrupt Head of the FBI. Today he was indicted by a Grand Jury on two felony counts for various illegal and unlawful acts. He has been so bad for our Country, for so long, and is now at the beginning of being held responsible for his crimes against our Nation. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

The indictment, at least in part, is based on an interaction Comey had with Texas Senator Ted Cruz at a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020.

In the key exchange in that hearing, Senator Cruz asked, as quoted by ABC News:

On May 3rd, 2017, in this committee, Chairman Grassley asked you point blank, have you ever been an anonymous source in news reports about matters relating to the Trump investigation or the Clinton investigation? You responded under oath, 'Never.' He then asked you, 'Have you ever authorized someone else at the FBI to be an anonymous source in news reports about the Trump investigation or the Clinton administration?' You responded again under oath, 'No.' Now, as you know, Mr. McCabe, who works for you, has publicly and repeatedly stated that he leaked information to the Wall Street Journal and that you were directly aware of it and that you directly authorized it. Now, what Mr. McCabe is saying and what you testified to this committee cannot both be true. One or the other is false. Who's telling the truth?

Cruz then summarized: "So your testimony is you've never authorized anyone to leak? And Mr. McCabe, if he says contrary, is not telling the truth, is that correct?"

Comey refused to give a straight answer, replying: "Again, I'm not going to characterize Andy's testimony, but mine is the same today."

According to the indictment itself, "On or about September 30, 2020, in the Eastern District of Virginia, the defendant, JAMES B. COMEY JR., did willfully and knowingly make a materially false, fictitious, and fraudulent statement in a matter within the jurisdiction of the legislative branch of the Government of the United States, by falsely stating to a U.S. Senator during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing that he, JAMES B. COMEY JR., had not "authorized someone else at the FBI to be an anonymous source in news reports" regarding an FBI investigation concerning PERSON 1."

The indictment continues: "That statement was false, because, as JAMES B. COMEY JR. then and there knew, he in fact had authorized PERSON 3 to serve as an anonymous source in news reports regarding an FBI investigation into PERSON 1."

Roger Stone who was a political target of the FBI and who was one of the foremost victims of Democratic lawfare during the Russiagate period posted his own take on the Comey indictment.

"I was indicted for lying under oath to Congress despite the fact that no misstatement I made was material nor hid any underlying crime," Stone posted on X.com. "James Comey lied to cover up the greatest dirty trick in American history — the Russian Collusion Hoax. This is ironic justice."
